At cryogenic temperatures (-196°C to -150°C), thermal transfer is the biggest challenge to soft seals and packing components. In our production facility, cryogenic globe and gate valves designed for liquid nitrogen or liquefied natural gas incorporate an extended bonnet (stem columns). This design complies with BS 6364 and ISO 28921-1 standards, keeping the gland packing area far enough away from the cold line. The gaseous phase of the media within the upper column acts as a thermal barrier, preserving elasticity and preventing structural packing freeze, which would otherwise result in dangerous external leakage.
Standard carbon steel becomes brittle and fractures easily at low temperatures. We use premium ASTM A351 CF8 (304) and CF3 (304L) stainless steel, which maintains high impact strength and notch toughness even in liquid helium ranges. Our high-performance gate and ball valves feature PCTFE (Kel-F) soft inserts for Class VI bubble-tight shutoff at low pressures. For high-cycle and abrasive environments, metal-to-metal seating using Stellite Cobalt-based hardfacing is applied. Through supersonic flame spraying, the surface achieves a hardness exceeding HRC 40, ensuring that sliding contact between gate and seat doesn't result in galling or high-torque operations, even when handling impure media.
One of the major hazards in cryogenic ball and gate valves is the risk of trapped liquid expanding in the body cavity. If liquid LNG is trapped in a closed ball valve cavity, it will vaporize as the ambient temperature rises, creating extreme pressure. Our ball valves feature a cavity relief system (such as a pressure relief hole on the upstream side of the ball) to automatically vent excess pressure back into the line, preventing body rupture.
